LOOKING FOR AN INEXPENSIVE, EASY-TO-GET-TO AND VERY ROMANTIC PIED A TERRE IN NORMANDY, FRANCE? IF YOU ARE, READ ON!

INTRODUCTION

The Apartment at the 18th Century Chateau d’Aumeville-Lestre is an ultra romantic and extremely elegant hideaway, perfect for two – though there is an extra bedroom, and can therefore sleep four.

It has dimmable chandeliers throughout, and can be entirely lit by candles. It is lavishly equipped and beautifully decorated, having been intended solely for use by the owner, his family and friends. 2010 is the first year it has been made commercially available for rental, and rental levels are being deliberately kept low for a limited period, to tempt visitors to see for themselves.

The Apartment is, of course, centrally heated and has a log fire in the Salon for out-of-season use. It is immaculately kept by a housekeeper.

Getting There is easy, all year round.

The obvious route is with Brittany Ferries (substantially discounted fares available via the owner) from Portsmouth or Poole to Cherbourg, from which the Chateau is but a half hour drive away.

From March to October there is a fast catamaran service (2 1/4 – 2 3/4 hours) while conventional ferries take 4 1/2 hours, but provide a very pleasant on-board experience with de luxe cabins, restaurants and cinemas.

The Brittany Ferries fare structure encourages 5 day and 10 day stays and the Apartment’s rental structure dovetails with that, with “3 day minimum – 10 day maximum” provision.

For those staying for the longer period a route via St Malo (for Mont St Michel) or Caen (the Ducal Palace) should be considered, allowing you to explore the whole area, with a stay at the Chateau as the centrepiece of the holiday.

It is also possible to come via the Channel Tunnel (4 1/2 hours to the Chateau) or via Paris with the Eurostar (2 3/4 hours, Paris to Valognes by train, then a 25 minute taxi ride).
